When booting is complete, you'll see a window of "OS X Utilities. Click on the volume of interest and select the desired user account in the popup. See the note at the top of this article about the administrator's name. Then enter the new password twice. A password hint is optional.
Boot into Recovery Partition
Click "Save. Go back to the Apple Menu at the top. That will prompt you to restart the Mac.

If all went well, when the Mac restarts normally, you'll be able to log in to the administrator account with the new password you defined in step 5 above. A final note.

Experience has shown that it's always wise to have two named administrators of any Mac. If, for some reason, the first account is borked or the password forgotten, a second administrator account can come to the rescue.

Plus, it's not as likely that both admin passwords would be forgotten. Wait a couple of seconds more, and then hold down Command-R on your keyboard while pressing the power button again to turn the machine on. OK, so here's a pickle. What if the password you can't remember is your administrator password, and it's the only administrator account on your Mac? That'll mean that when you try to log in as a different user, you can't even unlock the System Preferences pane because you don't know the only existing administrator password!

When you see the Apple icon appear on your screen, you can release Command-R. Afterward, you'll get a nifty little program in which you can choose the volume usually "Macintosh HD" containing the user account with the missing password.
